Stephanie A. Schmidt, MS, RD, CDN
My philosophy:
Whether you are trying to lose weight or manage a condition such as diabetes or heart disease, I am dedicated to helping you reach your individualized health goals through gradual and realistic lifestyle changes. It is important to know that if you are looking for a quick fix, then I am probably not the right fit for you. Hear me out. Anyone who has tried to "diet" in the past knows that while you may lose weight at first, you're sure to gain it all back once you stop those tough restrictions. I could certainly recommend a strict or "fad" diet to get you fast results, but this would not help you achieve and, more importantly, maintain optimal health for the long run. Although they do have their place, I do not promote expensive meal plans, specialty stores or supplements. Rather, I'll work with you one on one to build a plate that gives you the better bang for your caloric buck! When it comes to your plate, one size does NOT fit all. If you are willing to make the effort, I’ll be there to offer you with the support, education and guidance that you need to succeed.
My specialty:
I am a registered dietitian nutritionist specializing in weight control, disease management and prevention. I am empathetic to your needs and passionate about nutrition. In fact, it was my own weight loss journey that led me to return to school to pursue a career in dietetics. I pride myself on creating an environment where my clients feel comfortable and are motivated to succeed. Know that you are going to have setbacks! Together, you and I can personalize a plan that fits your lifestyle and maneuver obstacles as they arise to allow you to be the healthiest version of yourself.
My qualifications:
In addition to private practice, I have experience working as a clinical dietitian in both the long term care/rehabilitation and hospital settings. I have also been a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) and Long Island Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (LIAND) since 2008. Prior to nutrition, I earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Psychology from Stony Brook University. From there, I spent the next few years working in social services primarily with "at-risk" children, teens and their families. I began my academic career in dietetics at Suffolk County Community College. After graduating with the highest distinction, I earned my dietetic technician, registered (DTR) credentials. As a DTR, I specialized in sports nutrition and weight management for three years before continuing my education at Long Island University -Post. I graduated Magna Cum Laude and was awarded their highly competitive dietetic internship. Upon completion, I obtained my registered dietitian (RD) and New York State certified dietitian nutritionist (CDN) credentials and eventually returned to Stony Brook University for a Master of Science (MS) degree in Nutrition concentrating in Integrative Nutrition Therapy.
On a personal note:
As a working mother of three young children, I understand the challenge of trying to balance good nutrition with a hectic lifestyle. When not practicing nutrition, I enjoy spending time with my family, cooking, running, yoga and writing.
